Songhees Nation chose to participate in the BC Treaty Commission process with Canada and the Province of BC to negotiate a modern treaty.

Songhees is seeking constitutionally entrenched understandings on self-government, land and resources and fiscal matters. A modern treaty will not replace the treaties signed with Douglas in 1850.
Songhees is a member of the Te’mexw Treaty Association along with T’sou-ke, Scia’new, Snaw-naw-AS and Malahat First Nations. After over twenty years of negotiations, the process has reached the final stage and negotiations to finalize the Treaty are underway. The Treaty will be subject to ratification by Songhees Nation members.
