Songhees Nation Co-hosts Premiers Meeting with National Indigenous Organizations Leadership
Unceded Lekwungen Territory, Victoria BC – For the first time ever, the annual Premiers and NIO Leadership Meeting, chaired by BC Premier John Horgan, is being co-hosted by Chief Ron Sam of Songhees Nation and Chief Rob Thomas of Esquimalt Nation at the Songhees Wellness Centre.
Premiers and National Indigenous Leaders will have a conversation concerning the welfare of Indigenous families, youth, and children, and the environment. As part of a bilateral discussion, each National Indigenous Leader will have the chance to voice their perspectives.
“Songhees Nation is proud to co-host today’s Annual Premiers and National Indigenous Organizations meeting in traditional Lekwungen territory. Hosting this meeting at the Songhees Wellness Centre reflects and amplifies Indigenous voices in the decision-making process. We thank BC Premier John Horgan for the invitation, and we look forward to insightful discussions and the opportunity to share a meal with leadership.”
As this will be the first Premiers meeting held on reserve land, co-hosting will lay the groundwork for future partnership and collaboration as we work together towards reconciliation.
Chief Ron Sam says, “We are pleased about the opportunity to meet with government officials and leaders of National Indigenous Organizations, as we move forward in building a new relationship of partnership and reconciliation.”
